Patient Autonomy and Agency: An Overview of the Indian Healthcare Scenario

Ever since the individual human subject became the epicenter of moral deliberations, patient autonomy acquired primacy over the other bioethics principles like beneficence, non-maleficence and justice. But such individualism does not match with the cultural values of many non-Western countries like India, where group identities acquire primacy over individual identity. This paper is an attempt to problematize the demand for patient autonomy from the context of such a scenario.
