Maxwell and Gettysburg have agreed to work together to develop and promote the following areas of collaboration.

Public Service Advocacy and Promotion

Based on our shared mission of preparing students to address the complex questions of our time, Maxwell and Gettysburg will collaborate on initiatives to increase awareness of public service broadly and the pursuit of careers in the public and international affairs realm more specifically.

  • Maxwell faculty, staff, or alumni will visit Gettysburg at least once per year (in person or virtually) to participate in informational meetings and events aimed at increasing interest among current Gettysburg students and alumni in public service careers.
  • Maxwell and Gettysburg will collaborate on promotion of this partnership, and Maxwell will provide Gettysburg College with informational materials regarding its graduate degree programs and associated career opportunities.

 

Advising and Career Exploration

Gettysburg career, co-curricular and faculty advisors will collaborate with Maxwell's admission/enrollment advisors and career services professionals to provide the best possible service to students. The following opportunities have been made available:

  • Graduate Enrollment Advising Meetings: Maxwell graduate admission/enrollment advisors are available for individual virtual advising meetings with Gettysburg students to review eligibility and discuss strategies that will ensure they are best positioned to gain admission to their graduate program of interest. Use the “Request Info” link below and we’ll send details regarding scheduling a meeting.
  • Career Exploration Meetings: Gettysburg students who have completed at least 15 credits (junior class level) towards their bachelor's degree and who have already met with a Maxwell admission/enrollment advisor can request an individual career advising meeting with Maxwell's Palmer Career Center to more fully explore career opportunities for graduates of our professional and executive master's programs. NOTE: After meeting with a Maxwell enrollment advisor, you will be given a link to request a meeting with the Palmer Career Center.
  • Campus Visits: As noted above, Maxwell faculty, staff or alumni will visit the college annually to meet with Gettysburg students and alumni. Additionally, Maxwell's admission/enrollment staff will facilitate visits to the Syracuse University campus for interested Gettysburg students, including the opportunity to meet with relevant Maxwell faculty and staff, have lunch and a campus tour with a current student, and the option to sit in on a current graduate course in session.

Graduate Degree Enrollment Pathways

The following graduate degree programs, offered by the Public Administration and International Affairs Department at the Maxwell School, are included in this partnership.

Professional Master's

  • Master of Public Administration (40 credits)
  • M.A. in International Relations (40 credits)
  • M.A. in Public Diplomacy and Global Communications (43 credits)
  • M.S. in Sustainable Organizations and Policy (30 credits)

*Executive Master's

  • Executive Master of Public Administration (30 credits)
  • Executive M.A. in International Relations (30 credits)
*The executive master’s programs are designed for midcareer individuals and require a minimum of 7 years of professional work experience.

Application Process

Gettysburg students and alumni must formally apply through the Maxwell School graduate admission process following the policies and procedures at the time of application. A formal application currently consists of Syracuse University’s online application, personal statement/essay, résumé, two letters of recommendation and copies of all post-secondary transcripts. Current Gettysburg undergraduate students can apply any time after having completed a minimum of 23 credits towards their bachelor's degree. Gettysburg alumni can apply under this MOU at any time, provided the partnership is still active.

 

Student Benefits

  • The application fee will be waived for Gettysburg students and alumni.
  • *Gettysburg students and alumni who meet the criteria listed below will be guaranteed admission.
  • Gettysburg students and alumni who meet the criteria listed below will be awarded a partner scholarship in the amount of 40% of tuition charges for any of the "professional master's" programs or 30% for either of the "executive master's" programs. Highly qualified candidates may be eligible for a higher award.
  • Students who do not meet the stated criteria may still apply, but neither admission nor the partnership scholarship listed below will be guaranteed.

 

Guaranteed Admission Criteria

  • Cumulative GPA: The professional master's programs require a minimum of 3.75 out of 4.0 cumulative GPA (based on a minimum of 23 credits). The executive master's programs require a minimum of 3.25 cumulative GPA.
  • Work Experience and Co-/Extra-Curriculars: While the professional master's programs do not require any prior professional work experience, students are expected to have demonstrated their interest in the public service realm through the completion of an internship or other relevant co-curricular/volunteer experience(s). As noted above, the executive master's require at least 7 years of work experience.
  • Pre-Requisite Coursework: Students applying to the Master of Public Administration program are expected to have appropriate skills in the areas of analytical thinking and quantitative methods; this can be demonstrated through relevant coursework in mathematics and economics with grades of B+ or better OR by submission of official GREQ scores at the 75th percentile or higher.

*Maxwell, in its sole discretion, reserves the right to reject or revoke the acceptance of any student whose application or performance does not comply with the school's protocols or standards. Additionally, Maxwell reserves the right to limit the number of students enrolling via this MOU to no more than 10 per year.
