How to Apply to the P3HA Program

Eligibility

The P3HA Training Program supports doctoral scholars enrolled in one of the four participating doctoral programs at Syracuse University:

• Economics
• Human Development and Family Science
• Public Administration
• Sociology

Applicants must be admitted to one of these Ph.D. programs to be eligible for admission to the P3HA program. Students can participate in the P3HA program either as T32-funded or as non-T32-funded trainees (P3HA training affiliates). Postdoctoral scholars working with any of the P3HA faculty members may also apply for training affiliate status.

T32 refers to the NIH grant mechanism that funds the program, which is a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) institutional training grant from the National Institute on Aging (T32AG099823).

T32 Eligibility Requirements

As a federally funded training grant, the P3HA Training Program is subject to federal eligibility rules. T32-funded trainees must be citizens or non-citizen nationals of the United States or lawful permanent residents (i.e., in possession of a Permanent Resident Card) at the time of appointment. Individuals on temporary or student visas are not eligible for T32 support.

Non-T32 Eligible Participants

Doctoral students and postdocs who are not eligible for T32 funding or who are funded through other university sources are eligible to become a P3HA training affiliate and participate in P3HA programming.

Selection Criteria

Trainees are selected on the basis of:

• research potential,
• prior academic performance and methods preparation,
• demonstrated interest in population health and aging,
• fit with the program's faculty mentors and;
• strength of application materials.

Training affiliates funded through other sources may be subject to additional selection criteria or requirements specific to that funding.

Appointment Terms

T-32-funded trainees receive a 20-hour/week research assistantship stipend each year, along with:

• tuition coverage,
• access to enroll in reduced-rate, subsidized health insurance,
• a travel allowance to present at an academic conference and;
• a childcare allowance (if applicable).
