Eligibility Criteria
Automatic Fee Waivers - No Form Required
If you belong to one of the following groups and you select the relevant responses within your online application for admission, your application fee will be automatically waived regardless of which graduate program you are applying to. The groups that qualify for automatic application fee waivers are:
- U.S. veterans / active duty U.S. military personnel
- Syracuse University students and alumni
- McNair Scholars (please submit a letter of recommendation from your faculty research mentor)
- International Fulbright Scholars: IIE/AMIDEAST/LASPAU
- Applicants from Israel, Palestine and Ukraine (for 2026 admission)
All Other Application Fee Waiver Requests
Depending on the department or program you are applying to, you may be eligible for an application fee waiver based on your participation in a relevant group, program or organization. Some departments/programs also have a limited number of application fee waivers based on financial hardship. Please carefully review the information below to determine your next steps.
Applicable to All Maxwell Graduate Programs

Anthropology (Ph.D.)
Students interested in an application fee waiver should email the department at anthro@syr.edu. Please note that the anthropology department does not consider waiver requests for the M.A. program.
Economics (M.A. and Ph.D.)
Students interested in an application fee waiver should email the department at economics@syr.edu. You are encouraged to submit a copy of your resume, transcripts, and GRE scores (if available) along with your request.
Geography (M.A., Ph.D. and C.A.S.)
Students interested in an application fee waiver should contact the departmental graduate director at geograddirector@syr.edu, as well as cc Roxanne Tupper at rmtupper@syr.edu. The geography department offers a limited number of fee waivers to applicants. Requests are evaluated based on an applicant’s financial need and their match with a potential advisor. To be eligible for a fee waiver, applicants must have obtained written confirmation that a departmental faculty member is willing to supervise their project. Around December 1, the department will make a preliminary assessment of their applicant pool and allocate its fee waivers.

Political Science (M.A. and Ph.D.)
Students interested in an application fee waiver should contact the departmental graduate director, Dimitar Gueorguiev, at ddgueorg@syr.edu, as well as cc Candy Brooks at cbrook01@syr.edu. Due to budget constraints, the Political Science Department only considers fee waiver requests in unique circumstances or as part of ongoing recruitment activities. General requests for hardship and or need-based waivers will not be considered at this time.
Public Administration (Ph.D.)
