At the Maxwell School Dr. Van Slyke teaches the required Public Organizations and Management course, Project Management course for executives, the doctoral course in Organizational Theory, and a course on Policy Implementation. His research and teaching focuses on government contracting, public-private partnerships, government-business relationships, strategic management, policy implementation, and nonprofit management. He has published extensively on these topics in a range of domestic and international journal and practitioner publication outlets.

Dr. Van Slyke’s 2013 book, Complex Contracting: Government Purchasing in the Wake of the US Coast Guard’s Deepwater Program with Professors Trevor Brown and Matthew Potoski, will be published by Cambridge University Press. Perhaps nowhere else does the government fall short of hopes as when it buys big, complex products, such as weapons systems and major infrastructure projects.  This book presents an analytical framework to help government managers understand these contracts’ perils and promise and better achieve their win-win promise.   The management value of this complex contracting framework is richly illustrated through an analysis of the US Coast Guard’s Deepwater program.

Dr. Van Slyke’s 2010 book, The Future of Public Administration Around the World: The Minnowbrook Perspective with Professors Rosemary O’Leary and Soonhee Kim, is published by Georgetown University Press. An edited volume, the book contains a wide range of chapter contributions from many of the leading scholars in public administration around the world. Among those endorsing this book, former Chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve, Mr. Paul Volcker, wrote “We all complain about the ‘bureaucracy,’ and our faith in government seems to erode even as the challenges multiply. The experts contributing to this book – all public administration scholars – know about the problems in all their complexity. Both practitioners and those promoting reforms will benefit from the insights and the different perspectives of the authors.”

Dr. Van Slyke is actively engaged in the work of the Maxwell School’s Executive Education program and works extensively with senior government, NGO, and business leaders in China, India, Peru, Paraguay, Singapore, Thailand, and many other countries. Professor Van Slyke is also actively engaged in executive training and works with a number of national and professional associations, such as the National League of Cities.

Dr. Van Slyke serves on several editorial boards including the Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, American Review of Public Administration, Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, and the Journal of Public Affairs Education. He served on the Public Management Research Association (PMRA) Board of Directors from 2007-2011 and served as the 2011 PMRA Conference Chair. He also serves on several nonprofit and private boards, and is actively engaged in his professional and local community.

Prior to becoming an academic, Dr. Van Slyke worked in the private sector as a project manager in the commercial infrastructure field, then worked in state government in educational policy, and then for a national nonprofit organization.  He holds a Ph.D.in public administration and policy from The Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy at the University at Albany.
