Bio
Kanwal is a doctoral student in cultural anthropology. His topical interests include spatial/ temporal restrictions, sovereignty, nationalism and technology in the valley of Kashmir. He received a B.A. (2020) in anthropology with a minor in Middle East/ South Asia studies from the University of California, Davis.
His current work focuses on the discourse of Smart cities in Kashmir and its implications on temporal/spatial sovereignty in the valley. Kanwal’s previous work in his former institute brought out oral histories of various restrictions that have become a part of Kashmiri culture.
In addition to his work in Kashmir, he has worked in Amazonian Ecuador, where he explored performances through which the state makes its presence felt in the region to sustain an extractive economy.
