Applying to our Graduate Programs

To apply to the PhD program you must have a Master’s degree completed by the time of matriculation. Our admission cycle is for fall entrance only. We do not accept entry into the program in January. Every year applications are due on the January 1st before the Fall semester of that year (i.e.. January 1st, 2020 for Fall 2020 admission, January 1st, 2021 for Fall 2021, and so on). For information not available on this or the Graduate School websites, or if you have questions about the program, please contact Geography Director of Graduate Studies, Dr. Matt Huber, at mthuber@maxwell.syr.edu .

Procedures for Applying

Step One

Go the Graduate School website to start the application process and review the general information and guidelines for getting started.

Step Two

Complete the Graduate School's online application. You will need to create an account through which you can electronically upload all the necessary documents listed below:

  1. Transcripts from previous institutions
  2. Three letters of reference
  3. Statement of intent. This may be up to 1000 words and describe your general academic plans, including your interests in geography, why you decided to select Syracuse, and what you hope to study here. Specific topics within these areas would be especially helpful. The PhD applicant should identify one or more potential dissertation field areas of interest, and identify certain faculty members with whom you wish to work.
  4. An application fee form.
  5. For international students only:
    1. Visit the Slutzker Center for International Services for information about visa requirements.
    2. TOEFL or IELTS scores (only required for applicants whose first language is not English).

Electronic submission will greatly shorten the time from your submission of your documents to the receipt of your application in the geography department.
