On Friday, SUNY Upstate Medical University announced plans to acquire Crouse Hospital in Syracuse.

While the two hospitals have long been competitors, the proposed merger appears to be an acknowledgment that it no longer makes sense to compete head-to-head for patients by duplicating costly specialty services and engaging in a bidding war to recruit nurses and doctors.

"It’s a recognition that the competition that has been the hallmark for the last 20 years is not good for the community and this kind of significant change is warranted," says Tom Dennison, professor of practice emeritus of public administration and international affairs and health care expert.
