Flores-Lagunes to Lead the American Society of Hispanic Economists

Maxwell School Economics Prof. Alfonso Flores-Lagunes has been named president-elect of the American Society of Hispanic Economists (ASHE).

Flores-Lagunes’ three-year term will begin Jan. 1, 2022. He will serve as president-elect for the first year, president for the second year and past-president for the third and final year. 

The ASHE was founded in 2002 to promote the vitality of Hispanics in the economics profession through education, service and excellence. It is recognized by the American Economic Association as one of the academic organizations comprising the Allied Social Sciences Association.

Flores-Lagunes has previously served on the faculty at SUNY Binghamton, the University of Florida and the University of Arizona. He joined the Maxwell faculty in 2014 and additionally serves as the director of graduate studies for the Department of Economics, is a Melvin A. Eggers Faculty Scholar and a senior research associate in the Center for Policy Research. His research focuses on the economics of labor markets and economic evaluation of government programs and institutions. His work often explores the differential impact of policies across groups defined by race and ethnicity. 

Flores-Lagunes is an editor of the Journal of Population Economics, associate editor of the Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, Economics Letters and the Latin American Economic Review, and he serves on the editorial board of Ensayos Revista de Economía. He has published in numerous journals, including The Review of Economics and Statistics, The Economic Journal, the Journal of Human Resources, the Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, the Journal of Applied Econometrics, Health Economics and the Review of Financial Studies. 

Flores- Lagunes is a founding member of ASHE and served as chair of its scholarship and awards committee from 2018-20.

He received a Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 2001.
