Griffiths Comments on the US’s Ability to Acquire Greenland in La Presse Article

Trump announced 10% tariffs on goods from eight European countries opposing his goal to acquire Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, prompting European officials to consider using anti-coercion trade tools. An Ipsos poll shows 71% of Americans oppose taking control of Greenland by military force, while opinion on acquisition without force is more divided, particularly among Republicans.

Congress would have a say in a new acquisition as well as in a military intervention, says Ryan Griffiths, professor of political science. 

“The executive power is less hampered than we normally see, but that doesn't mean that there are no constraints,” he says.
