"The West has hit Russia with tough sanctions. They could be tougher still," written by Associate Professor of Political Science Daniel McDowell, was published in the Washington Post. The Biden administration described its first round of financial sanctions targeting Russia as "unprecedented." But McDowell argues that calling the sanctions unprecedented is an exaggeration. "The scope of the initial round, while severe, fell short of sanctions previously imposed on countries like Iran and Venezuela," says McDowell. "The United States and its allies could apply still more economic pressure down the line," he says.

McDowell also used ductwork and thermostats to explain how the SWIFT sanctions work in an interview on Marketplace.
