Ukraine’s military advances into Russian territory have renewed debate in Washington about a U.S. policy restricting the use of American-made weapons on targets deep within Russian territory. The Biden administration policy stems from concern that such long-range strikes with American-made weapons would cross a “red line” that would further escalate the war.
Vice Adm. Robert Murrett (Ret.), professor of practice of public administration and international affairs, speaking generally on the topic with The Hill, says that Ukraine “almost exclusively” goes after military targets rather than political ones. Murrett adds, “As long as you’re going after legitimate military targets, there’s kind of a recognition that those are not viewed as escalatory.”
