President Donald Trump ordered the U.S. military to immediately restart the process for testing nuclear weapons after a halt of 33 years, a move that appeared to be a message to rival nuclear powers China and Russia. Vice Adm. Robert Murrett (Ret.), professor of practice of public administration and international affairs, talks with CBS News about what the order means.
“There's no question there would be some value to having to have some testing of our weapons, especially some of the new developments we've had recently. But it's how you do that and how extensive the testing is something that's open to question,” says Murret.
“Any time any country does nuclear testing, it raises tensions. So, again, were we to do that, it would send a strong signal not just to China and Russia but also a lot of other countries around the world. But it can be handled carefully. And I think if it was handled carefully, it wouldn't necessarily have to raise tensions,” he says.
