Mission

The IGRI seeks to advance the study and application of the Institutional Grammar (IG), an analytical approach used to better understand the rules, norms and strategies that govern behavior in social systems. The IGRI supports the development of rigorous and open-source research, best practices and resources for experts and non-experts alike.

Research Themes

IGRI affiliates’ research focuses on five key areas:

  • Advancing theory and conceptual measurement using the IG
  • Facilitating the study of social behavior using the IG
  • Using the IG in the study of institutional performance
  • Advancing the development of methods to support institutional analysis
  • Developing computational approaches to support institutional analysis

Research Seminars

Every month, the IGRI hosts a virtual research seminar featuring scholars from around the world who use the IG to examine the origins, structure, and implications of institutional design. Seminars are also typically recorded and posted to the IGRI YouTube Channel.

Trainings, Workshops and Conferences

In addition to research, the IGRI hosts a variety of in-person and virtual learning opportunities. The annual Institutional Analysis Training is a three-week, virtual event that introduces participants to conducting institutional analysis with the IG.

The annual IGRI Doctoral Student Workshop is a three-day event designed to provide Ph.D. students with a more in-depth learning experience guided by the IGRI Directorate.

The IGRI has also hosted numerous international conferences in recent years.
