How to Participate

Fellowship Competition

There are four separate competitions to attend IQMR 2027 on a fellowship: the general competition; a competition for researchers at African scholarly institutions; a competition for researchers at Latin American scholarly institutions; and a competition for scholars based at scholarly institutions in the Arab MENA region. Fellowship recipients will be notified in December/January.

Scholars admitted through the general competition will have their participation at IQMR covered, receive a stipend to contribute towards the cost of meals, and have lodging covered for the duration of the institute. General open-pool attendees will be responsible for their own transportation costs to and from Syracuse University.

Scholars admitted through the African, Latin American and MENA competitions will have their participation at IQMR covered, will receive a stipend for meals, and will have their lodging covered for the duration of the institute, as well as their roundtrip economy-class airfare.

Nomination

In addition to receiving applications through the fellowship competition, IQMR also accepts participants who are nominated to attend by their home unit (center/department/school) using their own selection procedures. Nominations will open on December 2, 2026 and are due by February 28, 2027.

The fee structure for IQMR 2027 will be announced by November 15.

Participants will be housed in modern, air-conditioned two- and four-bedroom suites with each participant having an individual bedroom with its own bathroom; suites include a shared living/kitchen space.

Most departments sponsor their nominees. If you have any questions about the nominating process, please contact Sebastian Karcher at skarcher@syr.edu.

Hear From Our Participants

Learn to create and critique methodologically sophisticated qualitative research designs, including case studies, tests of necessity or sufficiency, and narrative or interpretive work. Explore the techniques, uses, strengths and limitations of these methods, while emphasizing their relationships with alternative approaches. And receive constructive feedback on your own qualitative research designs.

Watch our YouTube playlist for video introductions to each of the conference sessions.

Weekend Workshops

During the weekend between IQMR’s first and second weeks, a workshop is held featuring work-in-progress examining and developing techniques for gathering and analyzing qualitative data, and for combining qualitative and statistical methods.
