Core Requirements - Examination Option


This option requires a minimum of 30 credits, including:

  • three required classes of 3 credits each (listed below),
  • 21 additional course credits of which 9 can be outside of the department,
  • foreign language requirement and,
  • a one-hour oral comprehensive examination in their field of specialization (after completing 30 course credits and satisfying the foreign language requirement).

Thesis Option


This option requires a minimum 24 course credits, including:

  • three required classes of 3 credits each (listed below),
  • 15 additional course credits, 9 of which can be outside of the department,
  • 6 thesis hours and an oral defense of the thesis and,
  • a foreign language requirement which must be satisfied prior to the oral defense of the thesis.

Historiography (HST 801)

Theories and Philosophies of History (HST 803)


You will learn the history of historical thought and practice in the development of modern historical method.

First-Year Graduate Research Seminar (HST 804)


This seminar is geared to particular research interests of first-year students.
