Bio

Kaythari (Kay) Maw is a Ph.D. candidate in economics at Syracuse University. She is originally from New York City and is Burmese American. Her research interests center on labor economics, immigration economics and Asian American studies, with a focus on immigrant and refugee communities. She holds a master’s degree in regional science from Cornell University and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Barnard College, Columbia University.

At Cornell, she was awarded the Southeast Asia Foreign Language Area Studies Fellowship to study her heritage language, Burmese. Her current research investigates how school environments and peer composition influence educational outcomes and economic mobility for Burmese refugee students.
