The reception of Ukrainian refugees by European countries has been vastly different from previous refugee crises where European countries were largely resistant to being a safe haven for those escaping persecution, including the ongoing Syrian refugee crisis, where since 2015 more than 1 million Syrians have sought refuge in Europe with little to no support. What explains the differing responses? "It’s not just the identity of those knocking on Europe’s doors," writes Lamis Abdelaaty, assistant professor of political science, in her op-ed in the Washington Post. "Foreign policy and the labels we use to describe people on the move also play a role."
Abelaaty was also quoted in the Yahoo News article, "Does the Ukrainian refugee response expose a European double standard?" and the Vox article, "How you can help all refugees — from Ukraine and beyond."
