Ekbia Weighs In on the Senate’s AI Summit in The Messenger Article

This week's AI [artificial intelligence] summit, the second of nine planned by the Senate, represents an attempt by the senators to learn more about AI ahead of possibly adding new regulations to the industry. But it was seen by many attendees as a dud, with fewer attendees and a less interesting topic—how to structure new regulation without stomping out competitiveness and innovation within the industry.
Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), who helmed the summit, has touted the forum’s ability to draw a wide variety of speakers and experts—a “diversity set of perspectives.” But some observers still see the session as favoring existing players in the industry.
“I’m not sure about the ‘diversity’ of perspectives,” says Hamid Ekbia, University Professor and director of the Autonomous Systems Policy Institute. “Yes, there were people from all those groups, but the balance is heavily tilted toward industry.”
