Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended plans for a military takeover of Gaza City, arguing it is the quickest way to end the war despite mounting international criticism and UN warnings of “another calamity” in the already starving enclave.

“This is unfortunately very consistent with what Netanyahu's done over 22 months which is a shifting rationale,” says Osamah Khalil, chair of the International Relations Undergraduate Program.

“Every time we've come close to a permanent ceasefire he's come up with some new reason to basically impede it and therefore maintain his stay in office and continue to pressure. Part of this is an attempt, quite frankly, to expel the two million Palestinians from Gaza, to annex Gaza as part of a broader attempt annex the West Bank as well,” Khalil says.
