Iran says its counterproposal to end the war is “reasonable and generous.” President Trump says otherwise and rejected the proposal as totally unacceptable. Osamah Khalil, chair of the International Relations Undergraduate Program, joined News4JAX to discuss.

“There is room for negotiation on the nuclear program. But one of the things Iran is looking for is the following: they want the United States to agree, or at least to recognize, its right—Iran's right—too enrich uranium under the nuclear non-proliferation agreement that Iran signed and other countries have signed. Once the United States recognizes that right, then you can negotiate whether or not is it 10 years, is it 15 years, is it 20 years that Iran agrees not to enrich uranium.” says Khalil.

“Where there are other friction points is whether or not Iran will dismantle its nuclear sites, and I think that's highly unlikely. So that's a maximalist position that the Trump administration has that Iran is unlikely to agree to,” he says.

“Again, once you recognize that Iran has the right to enrich uranium under existing agreements, then you can negotiate how much uranium can be enriched, what do you do with the existing stockpile—does it go to a third country—and then finally, what do you do with the existing nuclear sites. That's going to take some time. We have a framework for that, but that also means the negotiators have to be negotiating in good faith and right now we're far away from that,” says Khalil.
