A KPBS story about a new study on the impact of increased deportations on California’s workforce included Laura-Anne Minkoff-Zern, associate professor of geography and the environment, for her insights on the agricultural and food-processing industry.

"Our entire food system is dependent on immigrants," said Minkoff-Zern, who recently co-authored the book Will Work For Food: Labor Across the Food Chain (University of California Press, 2025). Minkoff-Zern said the entire American food production system, from farming and processing to restaurant work, relies on immigrant labor and that efforts to get citizens to work in these jobs have been largely unsuccessful.
