Days after President Donald Trump announced the deployment of U.S. nuclear submarines in response to threats from ex-Russian Pres. Dmitry Medvedev, Russia and China took part in joint drills in the Sea of Japan.

The action was planned before Trump denounced the nuclear threats from Medvedev, an ally to Russian President Vladimir Putin, as "foolish and inflammatory." But the drills represent the latest sign of cooperation between the two countries.

Vice Adm. Robert Murrett (Ret.), professor of practice of public administration and international affairs, told Newsweek that while the response to Medvedev’s comments pales in comparison to some of the posturing that took place during the Cold War, "any shift in nuclear posture should be carefully calibrated, and act as a deterrent and not a prelude to unchecked increased tensions."
