On December 8, President-elect Joe Biden nominated recently retired four-star Army Gen. Lloyd Austin to be his secretary of defense, despite the law requiring nominees to have been out of the military for at least seven years. University Professor Sean O'Keefe says that while the nomination of may have surprised more than a few people, Austin "may well prove to be exactly the right person for this tough job at this time in our nation’s history."
