Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country earlier this week, a day after almost 100 people were killed in clashes with the police as student-led protesters demanded she step down.
The student protest coordinators have called for the formation of a new interim government with Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus as its chief advisor.
“This revolution movement was led by very young students, the youthful generation. And they have called upon Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus to be the chief advisor of this interim, caretaker government. And they've called for peaceful transition,” says Farhana Sultana, professor of geography and the environment and senior research associate in the Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Collaboration.
“I believe the reason why they have called for him is because there has been quite a lot of factional politics in Bangladesh throughout history,” Sultana says. “Currently there is a call for greater peace and calm and trying to find leaders who do not necessarily have any old political alliances. I believe that is why Dr. Muhammad Yunus is widely respected and desired by the young leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement,” she says.
