Panel Discussion: Challenges to Public Diplomacy in the Coming 5G/AI Era

Enormous technological changes are just around the corner, approaching at the speed of light, with consequences for governance, the global economy, social and cultural life. Publics – and professionals trained in public communications and international affairs – will play a central role in adopting the innovations and adapting to the consequences.

As former Newhouse Dean Lorraine Branham discussed in her recent interview: “It’s impossible to ignore the ‘infoquake’ that is moving and shaking global public communications. Across the world, people are changing the ways they give and receive information. Instant mobile technology is driving communicators to rethink everything we’ve learned and re-imagine the possibilities.”

Maxwell Dean David Van Slyke has noted, “In the past, we had reflective contemplation about how we should respond to issues. It informed activism and dissent. Now we live in an age of instantaneous response. There is a void of deeper understanding. It has contributed to political polarization and made us more disconnected from one another.”

A panel of experienced public diplomacy professionals will lead a conversation on the challenges of the coming decade. Participants in the panel will include Nichole Allem, Public Affairs Strategist, U.S. Department of State; Felipe Estefan, Investment Manager, Luminate; Rosalina Jowers, Research Manager, The Hub Project; Nick Lombardo, Public Affairs and Communications, Tata Sons Ltd.; and Kerina Wang, Partnerships and Trust Fund Manager, Economic Cooperation, International Monetary Fund.
