Derek Slap ’95 B.A. (IR) was recently sworn in as a Democratic state senator for the 5th State Senate District of Connecticut. Slap is also the vice president of marketing and communications at the UConn Foundation and a lecturer in political science at Yale University.

Chance Briggs '97 M.P.A., country director for Save The Children in Mozambique, says "the Southern hemisphere has never seen anything like this in a natural disaster." He assesses that "right now, funding is the urgent need...If we don't get people quickly back on their feet now, they will have trouble reconstructing their houses, reconstructing their livelihoods."

Jean Mercier ’82 Ph.D. (PA), adjunct professor of political science at the l’Université Laval, has co-authored a book which explores the governance patterns of three cities in the Americas: Seattle, Montreal, and Curritiba, Brazil. Utilizing theories such as path dependency, institutional culture, and transaction costs, the authors explore how each of these cities responds differently to common challenges in sustainable urban transport.

Steve Lux, director of Executive Education, and Maxwell alumnus Nick Armstrong '08 M.P.A./'14 Ph.D. (SSc), IVMF senior director of research and policy, claim the new program will help veterans and military family members who aspire to public office or another form of a political career.

Katie Conti ’18 B.A. (IR) is a special assistant for the GlobalConnect Division of the Meridian International Center, a nonprofit, nonpartisan diplomatic and global leadership institution. Conti was previously a staff assistant at the Brookings Institution and a summer intern at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

"Unbeaten: Rocky Marciano’s Fight for Perfection in a Crooked World," by Mike Stanton ’79 BA (PSc), has been named one of the best books of 2018 by the Boston Globe and Library Journal, and as a 2018 Reader’s Favorite by the Wall Street Journal. Stanton’s first book, the New York Times bestseller "The Prince of Providence," will be adapted for the stage by Trinity Repertory Company in Providence.

Casa Systems, a leading broadband infrastructure provider which operates in more than 70 countries and employs more than 700 people worldwide, named Maxwell alumnus Maurizio Nicolelli ‘90 B.A. (PSc) as its new chief financial officer. Nicolelli was previously CFO of FactSet Research Systems, a financial data and software company.

Before serving as Zika’s chief of staff, Jihun Han ’16 B.A. (PSc) worked as a political affairs manager for the Oregon Association of Realtors, one of the largest trade associations in Oregon.

Mathematica Policy Research has appointed Maxwell alumna Kimberlin Butler ’03 M.P.A. as their new director of foundation engagement. In her new role, Butler will lead the organization’s work with foundations, grantees, and their partners.

Maxwell alumnus John E. Hall ’00 M.P.A. has been named the new executive director of the Indianapolis Housing Agency, which provides public housing services and skills-based training programs to over 9,600 Indianapolis residents. Hall previously served as director for the City of Wichita’s Housing and Community Services Department, where he successfully implemented affordable housing preservation and health home initiatives.

The report by Maxwell alumnus Chris Pulliam ’17 B.A. (Econ/Psc)/’18 M.P.A. examines various proposed and current tax credit policies in the United States, including the earned income tax credit, child tax credit, and workers tax credit.

Maxwell alumnus Joe Reilly ’11 MPH is the new chief technology innovation officer for Canton & Company. In his new role, he will direct the company’s efforts to connect clients with healthcare technologies that improve operational efficiency and long-term growth.
