Tax breaks tallying more than $5 trillion—but also sizable reductions in Medicaid health care, food stamps and green energy strategies to fight climate change—faced sharp debate as House lawmakers slogged through marathon overnight hearings on Republicans’ “big, beautiful bill.” Grant Reeher, professor of political science, joined LiveNOW from FOX to discuss.
“There are some moderate Republicans that have concerns over some of the things that are included here, and there are some more traditionally conservative Republicans that are concerned about the debt and the deficit, because this does have large tax cuts, new spending and then some spending savings, so to speak, through Medicaid and the food stamp program and some other items there, again the Clean Energy tax credits. So there's concern about that,” says Reeher.
“Having said that, there's going to be an enormous amount of pressure on the Republicans to stay together on this. More than anything else that any Republican who's serving in Congress right now will face, because this is going to be Donald Trump's signature domestic bill. And he wants to get it through and he wants to get it through quickly. And Mike Johnson wants to do that. And so there's going to be a lot of pressure to tow the line,“ Reeher says.
