Poland intercepted and destroyed suspected Russian drones that entered its airspace on Wednesday, supported by NATO ally aircraft. This marks the first known instance of a Western alliance member opening fire during Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Moscow denied involvement, while a senior Polish diplomat noted the drones appeared to originate from Ukraine’s direction. Russia’s Defense Ministry acknowledged launching a large-scale drone strike on military sites in western Ukraine but insisted it had no intention of targeting Poland.

“Ukraine gets hit by hundreds of drones and missles every night, so 20 seems like a small number. But, of course, Poland is a NATO member state. The United States is a member of this alliance and Poland is asking for consultations among the alliance. Several other countries sent aircraft to help down some of the drones. So this is at least a potential escalation here in the war beyond the Russia-Ukraine war,” says Brian Taylor, director of the Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs.
