Although Vladimir Putin has participated in recent dialogue with the U.S. on the war with Ukraine, experts say the Russian president remains committed to subjugating parts of Ukraine.

“He [Putin] continues to launch missle and drone attacks, and military attacks continue along the front line. So Putin is really betting on a military solution, not a political one, despite all of the talks that took place over the last week,” Brian Taylor, director of the Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs, tells CBS News

Taylor also spoke with LiveNOW from FOX about the likelihood of a meeting between Russia and Ukraine. “I don't see any real prospect for a meeting unless we're at the point where there's an actual agreement ready to be signed and we're so far away from that right now, I think talk of a meeting is very premature,” says Taylor.

“I don't think there's been a whole lot of progress made. I think from the Russian point of view they intend to continue to prosecute the war until they have some degree of control over Ukraine. That's been the goal all along, not just about a specific piece of territory,” Taylor says. “And Ukraine remains equally determined to protect their independence and sovereignty. So that's the big picture difference betweent the two sides and it's hard to bridge those.”
