Ma quoted in SCMP article on Trump's visa rules for foreign students

Yingyi Ma 2019International students attending schools that operate entirely online "may not take a full online course load and remain in the United States," US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) declared on Monday, dealing a sharp blow to Chinese students in the US. "A large majority of Chinese students [are] coming to study in the US not for political reasons," says Yingyi Ma, associate professor of sociology. "What they really want is quality education opportunities, so that they can improve their career prospects, or they can broaden their horizons and really enjoy being in the process of cultivating their global citizenship." But Ma warns that such aspirations will vanish if the US continues to politicize this group and make studying abroad a grim prospect.
