The Supreme Court ruled to uphold a law that could lead to a ban on the video-sharing social media platform TikTok in the United States. The law is set to go into effect on Sunday as planned.

The bipartisan law requires China-based TikTok owner ByteDance to divest itself of the company by Sunday, Jan. 19, the day before President-elect Donald Trump is to take office.

According to several reports, Chinese officials—who are expected to have some say over whether and how TikTok’s U.S assets could be sold to an American buyer—are discussing a possible option that involves selling at least a portion of the U.S. version of the app to Elon Musk’s X.

Musk’s “significant financial resources, established business ties in China through Tesla, and prominence in the social media industry via X make him a potential candidate for brokering a deal acceptable to multiple stakeholders,” says Dimitar Gueorguiev, associate professor of political science.
