Professor of Political Science Grant Reeher provided analysis on the midterm election results to local, national and international news outlets. Following is a list of articles and a selection of his comments:

“Democrats claim sweeping election wins nationwide and in Central New York”
“It was really surprising. I didn’t expect the Republicans to retake the [Onondaga County] legislature, but I also didn’t expect them to lose ground. And not only did they lose ground, they could end up with a very, very small number of seats,” Reeher says.

“The left’s victories at the ballot box: Zohran Mamdani’s socialist summer reaches the midterms”
“Last night sets up the conversation for Democrats regarding the place of democratic socialism and the Left in the party, but does not provide an answer,” Reeher says. The widespread rejection of the Trump administration can also be measured by the way Democrats on the party’s left flank “were able to ride the same wave, and not be singled out for less support or defeat because they were too liberal.”

“An open challenge, rather than one that happens behind closed doors, might show an early split in the party along the same lines that will cause it an issue going into 2028, so I imagine there may be a consensus to avoid drawing more attention to that,” says Reeher.

“Blue tsunami in the US: clear message to Trump”
“Voters seem to be sending a pretty clear message that they are not happy with Trump for the first time in two years and they are holding the Republican candidates responsible for that,” Reeher says. “We see the same phenomenon among Republican members at the regional level, who have nothing at all to do with Trump. But they are voted out of office for the same reason.”
