Sociologist’s Article Recognized by the Association for the Sociology of Religion

Merril Silverstein


Merril Silverstein, professor and chair of sociology, has been awarded the Sociology of Religion Distinguished Article Award for 2024 for his co-authored article, "Did Gender Egalitarianism Weaken Religiosity in Baby Boom Women? A Developmental-Historical Approach" (Sociology of Religion, 2023).

Presented by the Association for the Sociology of Religion (ASR), the award recognizes the most outstanding journal article published in the previous volume of Sociology of Religion, honoring exceptional contributions to the sociological study of religion. ASR is an international scholarly association striving to advance theory and research in the sociology of religion.

One of his three co-authors and fellow honorees is Maria Brown, associate research professor at Syracuse’s School of Social Work. The two others are University alumni: Woosang Hwang received a Ph.D. in human development and family science from the Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics and is now an assistant professor at Sookmyung Women’s University in South Korea, and Jeung Hyun Kim earned a Ph.D. in sociology from the Maxwell School and is a postdoctoral scholar at Brown University

Silverstein is also a professor of human development and family science and holds the title of inaugural Marjorie Cantor Endowed Professor in Aging. He serves as a faculty associate at the Aging Studies Institute and is a research affiliate at both the Center for Policy Research and the Center for Aging and Policy Studies. His research has been published in over 150 publications.
