Robert Rubinstein, Distinguished Professor of Anthropology and professor of international relations, has co-authored the textbook Cultural Awareness for Peace Operations Personnel.

Rubinstein and co-author Clementine K. Fujimura wrote the book to accompany a course of the same name offered by the Peace Operations Training Institute in Richmond, Virginia. The course and book are intended to provide peace operations personnel with a foundational understanding of culture and the multifaceted role of cultural awareness in peace operations.

The book examines how culture influences peace operations within missions as well as among mission organizations. It also explores how cultural competence enables effective operations in the complex hybrid realities of modern conflict.

Rubinstein’s expertise spans political and medical anthropology, as well as social science history and research methods. He has published more than 100 articles in journals and books and is the author or editor of 10 books and research monographs.

He is the director of graduate studies in anthropology, and a senior research associate for the Campbell Public Affairs Institute, the Middle Eastern Studies Program, the Center for Qualitative and Multi-Method Inquiry and the Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Collaboration.
