Despite the buzz around Zohran Mamdani’s surprise win and concerns about Gen Z embracing socialism, most young people aren't rejecting capitalism outright—they're demanding honesty, fairness and meaningful change in a system they see as broken.

Gen Z is disillusioned with the status quo due to economic anxiety, climate crisis and systemic inequality, and they want both politicians and business leaders to stop offering platitudes and start offering real, transparent solutions.

“We’re not seeing young people go live on communes,” says Shana Gadarian, Merle Goldberg Fabian Professor of Excellence in Citizenship and Critical Thinking. “They’re working at banks, they’re starting gig economies, they’re working in high tech. If that’s not capitalism, I’m not clear what would be.”
