The next speaker of the House could be determined by some key battleground seats in New York. Those include Congressional District 22, which consists of Syracuse and Utica.
Republican Rep. Brandon Williams is the incumbent and has held the seat since he was elected in 2022. Democratic state Sen. John Mannion won his primary in June. He will now face Williams in this competitive seat that went for President Joe Biden by 12 points in 2020.
“Because the district was slightly redistricted in a way that made it somewhat more favorable to Democrats and because of the nature of the two candidates in this race, I would say that Mannion would probably be the favorite in this race,” says Grant Reeher, professor of political science.
