Online pivot offers new options for Executive Education programs

Peace Corps, Fulbright evacuees find community, opportunity at Maxwell

on a Monday morning in mid-March, Jeremy Gonzalez opened his email and learned he was being immediately evacuated from his Peace Corps post in West Timor, Indonesia. Although the COVID-19 pandemic had already prompted travel restrictions around the world, his evacuation orders were sudden and frantic.

Exec Ed alum links Syracuse’s disability rights work with Uzbekistan

“I am truly impressed by how the academic and research environment for persons with disabilities is advanced and promising for replication in Uzbekistan,” said Mirjakhon Turdiev, a current social science Ph.D. candidate. “A rights-based approach to persons with disabilities and disability understanding in general is something I planned to export to Uzbekistan.”

Center for Disability Resources empowers students, changes perceptions

Miguel Pica ’22 knows the important work the Center for Disability Resources (CDR) does to help students with disabilities meet their academic goals. He has been working with an access counselor at the center since he came to campus in 2019—and has found his personal success with their efforts.

Humphrey Fellow credits LaunchPad for entrepreneurial experience

Maxim Glagolev, a Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, started Geeklama, an online coding school that makes quality live coding lessons available to all kids. The Blackstone LaunchPad helped connect him with U.S. experts in specialized areas such as incorporation and finance as Geeklama launched in this country.

Remote Humphrey project supports Congressional voting by proxy

Marco Konopacki was looking forward to closing out his Humphrey Fellowship year working in House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer’s Washington, D.C., office. But the novel coronavirus pandemic upended his plans, and he flew home to Brazil. There he, like the rest of the Maxwell School’s 2019 cohort, conducted his professional affiliation remotely.

In Athenian Oath, EMPA grad hears ‘call to action for democracy'

Christopher Cartwright ’90 takes to heart the Athenian Oath’s call to “leave things better than we find them.” Cartwright, who earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and journalism and has worked in federal financial management with the U.S. Department of Commerce for 30 years, led the recitation of the Oath at this spring’s graduate convocation hosted by the Department of Public Administration and International Affairs.

Capstone projects aim to connect theory to practice

Seema Kumar came to the Maxwell School to pursue an Executive Master of Public Administration (EMPA.) Kumar, deputy secretary at the Home Department, Jaipur, the capital of the Indian state Rajasthan, hoped her executive education program would help her improve government operations and assess an e-government initiative.

Maxwell welcomes four Robertson Fellows as part of new MPA/MAIR class

All Robertson fellows at Maxwell receive funding for two years of study, allowing them to pursue one of the joint degrees offered through Public Administration and International Affairs; the grants cover not only full tuition, but a living stipend, health insurance, and assistance in finding a summer internship. All four of this year’s incoming fellows will pursue the joint M.P.A./M.A.I.R. degree.
