Mark Monmonier's Book Traces the Invention of the Clock System

Mark Monmonier

Monmonier, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Geography and the Environment, follows John Byron Plato's path from farmer in his mid-30s to inventor of several inventions including the “Clock System,” which assigned addresses to rural residences without house numbers.

Desertification, the process by which fertile land becomes desert, typically as a result of drought, deforestation or inappropriate agriculture, has become rampant in the United Arab Emirates. Mark Monmonier, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Geography and the Environment, was named a 2021 Fellow by the American Association of Geographers (AAG). Fellows are chosen for their contributions to geographic research, advancement of practice, and careers devoted to strengthening the field of geography, including teaching and mentoring.
