Humphrey fellow closed her Syracuse University chapter with good-natured relief at navigating logistical challenges of the program, truncated because of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Failure was not an option,” Piyabelan Bouyo of Togo said during the Humphrey year-end celebration.

Grads set to make the world greater, better and more beautiful

The Maxwell School closed its 2020-2021 academic year the same way it met the complications of the COVID-19 pandemic: a mix of health precautions, expanded technology and commitment to tradition. That meant a prerecorded graduate convocation and faculty farewells via video. Maxwell’s May 22 graduate convocation also included speeches and award presentations, capped with recitation of the Athenian Oath.

Executive Education event outlines lessons of COVID-19 disruption

“There’s no doubt that we are not going back to the way it was. There will be a—quote unquote—new normal," says Catherine Gerard, associate director of Executive Education, about the short- and long-term effects of the novel coronavirus pandemic. “This has been an incredible disruption,” University Professor Sean O’Keefe said. “This disruptive change is having a global consequence.”

Catherine Gerard concludes 15 years of leadership at PARCC

After serving as its director or co-director since 2005, Catherine Gerard has stepped down from her leadership role at the Maxwell School’s renowned Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Collaboration (PARCC), effective July 1, 2020. Gerard will continue as an adjunct professor of public administration and associate director for the Executive Education Programs at Maxwell, and also continue her work as co-director of the Collaborative Governance Initiative at PARCC.

Humphrey Fellows workshop, Coronavirus serves as case study

Humphrey Fellows at a recent weeklong seminar discussed the coronavirus in the context of crisis management planning. “Crises are almost the perfect storm for challenges in good governance,” workshop leader and Maxwell School faculty affiliate Bruce W. Dayton said. “During a crisis you are under high stress. Everyone is paying attention. You have very short time to make decisions and you’re confronted with uncertainty. All of those are interconnected.”

Amid impeachment trial, UPA program provides look at US politics

About 20 public policy graduate students from the Universidad Panamericana’s (UPA) Mexico City campus arrived in Washington, D.C., in the middle of the U.S. Senate’s impeachment trial of President Donald Trump. “They had lots of questions, from the politics of impeachment, to the mechanics, to what it said about the structure of U.S. political institutions,” says Grant Reeher, professor of political science and director of the Campbell Public Affairs Institute.

Mandela Washington Fellows introduced to SU Libraries

Last summer, a group of young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa made their way to the Syracuse University campus as part of the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). The program is funded by the U.S. Department of State and empowers young leaders through academic coursework, leadership training, and networking across higher education institutions and communities across the United States.

December graduates celebrate new skills, strong relationships

The graduates are midcareer professionals who shared their international perspectives, learned from each other and Maxwell faculty, eager to return to their native countries to implement new skills.
